Chocolate Turmeric Smoothie

For the longest time I was a die hard smoothie addict.  Need a quick breakfast to grab on the way to work?  Smoothie.  Need a quick lunch in the middle of an insane day?  Smoothie.  Need an afternoon snack after a sweaty workout sesh?  Smoothie.  I love the fact that you can throw a ton of goodness into a blender and have something healthy to fuel your body with.  In my mind this is a far better alternative to hitting up some fast food joint when you are in need of something quick to eat {drink?}.  

After having Cash I LIVED on smoothies.  I had several a day.  The hunger is real.  I would wake up starving.  The first week after Cash was born Kass would have to run downstairs in the morning to make me a smoothie while I fed Cash because I was famished!  Later I would then have a huge breakfast and still be hungry.  It scared me at first.  I thought there is no way I am going to lose the baby weight if I keep eating like this.  However, after some time that intense hunger faded and I was able to resume a pretty normal eating schedule and the baby weight came off.  Phew!

For most of this past year I have really limited myself on smoothies.  I realized the amount of fruit I was consuming in a day was probably a bit much and I needed to change up my breakfasts.  Also, living on smoothies is not a good idea. 

Sometimes it can be so easy to get stuck in what is familiar, so it was a challenge to myself to mix it up a bit in the breakfast area.  Now I am addicted to plantains "fried" in coconut or olive oil with an egg over easy.  Seriously amazing.  

Lately when I do have a smoothie, this has been my go to smoothie.  Turmeric is an amazing spice and is often used in curries.  There are so many health benefits to Turmeric {helps arthritis, heartburn, stomach pain, headaches, bronchitis, fever, menstrual pain, depression, fat burning, helps prevent cancer, good for digestion, good for the liver, lungs, and gallbladder, can be rubbed on the skin to help with pain and bruising, inside the mouth for sores, on infected wounds, and the list goes on...}  I love using powerhouse spices and herbs as much as I can, so I think it is pretty clear why I love Turmeric so much.  Plus it adds an unexpected kick to the smoothie.  It is fantastic!

Chocolate Turmeric Smoothie

Serves: 1

Ingredients:

  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1/4 of an avocado
  • 3/4 tsp turmeric*
  • 1 tsp chia seeds
  • 1 1/2 tsp cacao
  • 2 Tbsp sunbutter
  • 1 c almond or coconut milk

Directions:

  1. Blend everything together in a blender until smooth!  Enjoy!

*Note: if you are new to using turmeric I would suggest starting with 1/4-1/2 tsp at first, then add more as you acquire a taste for it.
