DIY Oil of Oregano

A few weeks ago I posted on my Instagram that I was trying out making my own Oil of Oregano.  I actually had no intention of posting it here but it was a popular post so I thought it may be useful information for others.

Oil of Oregano is something that I have wanted to try for some time now as I have read that it can be great for battling Candida.  Buying all these herbs and following a special diet for Candida can crunch the budget though.  It is totally worth it and way less expensive than other medical routes but still...

So a few weeks ago I was going through my garden to move my herbs inside for the winter.  I had an abundance of oregano and was wondering what to do with it.  Then BOOM, it came to me, I should try making my own oil Oil of Oregano.  I am not sure why I didn't think of it sooner and it turns out it is super simple to make.

So the next time I was at the health food store I checked the ingredients of their Oil of Oregano to make sure I could actually make it.  Sure enough, it was just oregano and olive oil.  I headed for home and proceeded to make my own that afternoon.

I had a good idea of what I needed to do but I googled how to make it just to be sure I was on the right track.  I found one on Mercola's website that I used for reference as well my canning knowledge to whip up this Oil of Oregano.  Mercola has a ton of information on the benefits of Oil of Oregano so check them out to learn more.

The main thing I know is that a little goes a long way and you don't want to use it long term.  You use it for about 10 days and then go off of it.  I have a actually read that when treating Candida you need to switch up any of your anti-fungals because the Candida adapts to them and the anti-fungals will no longer be effective at killing the Candida.  If you have ever treated Candida make sure to comment below and let me know what has worked for you.  I am always looking for more information.

So now, onto making the Oil of Oregano

Oil of Oregano

  • olive oil {enough to cover all of the oregano}
  • oregano {enough to fill a half pint jar 3/4 of the way}

  1. Add a half pint jar and lids to a boiling pot of water to sterilize the jar.  Let it soft boil for 10 minutes.
  2. Remove jar and lids from the water and set on a clean towel.  Turn the water down so it is just simmering.
  3. Chop the oregano.  Using a mortar and pestle grind the oregano to release the oil of the oregano {you can also do this with your fingers}.
  4. Add the oregano to the jar.  Cover the oregano with olive oil {make sure all of the oregano is under the olive oil otherwise it will go moldy}.
  5. Place the lid on the jar and put it in the simmering water.  Turn the heat off and let the jar set in the water for 10 minutes.
  6. Remove the jar from the water and place it in a window with a lot of sunlight.  Let it sit for the next 2 weeks.  Each day shake the jar.
  7. After 2 weeks, strain the oil/oregano through a cheesecloth.  You can store the oil in the half pint jar or put it in a sterilized bottle with a dropper to make dispensing it easier.

*Note: Mercola suggests 4-6 drops per day for 7-10 days.
